Innovation & Design Thinking Training

Creating and scaling more innovative outcomes using design and lean start-up

As business becomes more challenging, individuals and organisations are needing new ways to improve their creativity and innovation. They are also needing to improve their speed to market; it’s pointless having great ideas and solutions if it takes you three years and $10M to get them in front of your customers. This is especially relevant in the corporate space where the large engines of value creation take a long time to turn and gain momentum.

What organisations need is a means to help the army of business analysts, architects and project managers to deliver more creative solutions in shorter turnaround times, through a human-centred lens.

This is the “Design in Business” course that we offer.

“Design in Business” is an  innovation course. It introduces individuals and teams to design thinking tools for exploration activities, and agile and lean startup tools for incubation and scale activities. The course will help attendees be more human-centered in their approach to problem solving, and more lean startup and innovation focussed in incubating and validating business and customer solutions.

Attendees learn the same design and lean startup tools used in launching new and innovative products and services to market, as well as how to leverage these tools to support strategic planning, business analysis, architecture and agile delivery within a corporate environment.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the journey from foresight to exploration to incubation to scale.
  • Develop a thorough, hands-on understanding of the design thinking innovation and experimentation approach.
  • Understand how design integrates with strategy, the lean start-up and agile to develop a complementary set of toolkits and skills that can be used in any part of the organisation.
  • Develop an understanding of how to use these disciplines within a corporate environment.

Why Design and Lean?

According to the World Economic Forum, the top three skills employers’ need by 2020 and onwards will be:

1. Complex problem solving
2. Critical thinking
3. Creativity.

In addition, this research identified that 35% of the skills considered important by employers will have changed within a five-year period[1]. These changes are expected to take place due to shifts in technology, business processes and decision making which have already started to occur in our workplaces today.

Now more than ever we need to be innovating more effectively, and more efficiently. Innovation almost never fails due to a lack of creativity. It’s almost always because of a lack of discipline. Discipline around exploring the problem and possible solutions, incubating this solution to learn fast, and scaling this solution for greater impact.

Design Thinking places the top three skills listed above at its heart, along with its focus on understanding people and delivering value. It is an approach that has evolved over time to be one of the fastest and most effective ways to develop innovative solutions to complex problems, and is already embraced by many of the world’s leading organisations.[2]

The lean start-up also provides a disciplined approach to getting a desired product and service into customers hands sooner. The incubation techniques you will learn, will provide a strong foundation for organisations wanting to incubate and scale solutions with maximum acceleration.

How the course works

Our 4-day course will give you the skills, knowledge and experience needed to apply design thinking and lean incubation in your workplace, as well as understanding how it complements strategy, architecture and agile approaches. The course is suitable for people with no existing knowledge of design thinking, agile or lean thinking, as well as those who already work in design and innovation areas.

Across the 4-days, you will learn and apply design thinking to solve a relevant business problem, and learn how to incubate this further into the market and / or the organisation. You will work as part of a small team of participants and receive input and guidance along the way. This learning approach enables you to experience and understand all aspects of the innovation journey to help you master the materials in a short timeframe.

At the end of the course, you will be able to successfully contribute to, or lead teams to apply design thinking, innovation, and lean start-up techniques within your organisation.

We’ve helped organisations embed design, agile and lean as a means to innovate more effectively. Some of our clients include the World Bank, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Telstra, Rio Tinto, Australia Post, ANZ, NAB, and the National Archives, amongst others.
